Hummus

If I had to choose one food that I could only eat for the rest of my life, it would be hummus. I LOVE hummus. I love hummus so much that I genuinely think ‘You Don’t Want to Mess With The Zohan’ is a great movie, as Zohan shares my passion in it.

It is cheap to buy store bought hummus and can be a quick and healthy snack, but as always, making it yourself is so worth the effort.

You can customise this recipe  any way you want, I rarely make it the same way twice, but I always use this one as a base.

The cayenne pepper is optional but if you choose to omit it, you’re nuthin but a crazy fool.

You’ll need a food processor for this. You’ll also need tahini, a sesame seed paste. These are available at all supermarkets over the World now, usually in the health food section. Don’t worry, these store in the fridge for months and trust me, you will make this a lot….

Makes about 5 small servings or 2 or 3 meals

Ingredients:

  • 1 tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 lemon,  juiced
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, extra to serve
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Small bit of cayenne pepper

 Hummus

Cook it:

  1. Start by adding the chickpeas and garlic clove to the food processor. Give them about 1 minute in the processor
  2. Add the lemon juice, tahini, salt and about ¼ cup of water. Be careful here, you don’t want to add to much and end up with a chickpea drink so maybe add in small quantities. You are still adding oil so you don’t want the consistency perfect yet. Mix for at least 2 minutes
  3. Pour in the olive oil whilst it is mixing and a pinch of cayenne pepper (by pinch I mean a small bit – if you do literally pinch a bit in, go wash your hands – that shit will KILL your eyes when you rub them at amazement at how good this hummus is)
  4. Give it one final mix and assess the texture and thickness. If it needs a tiny bit more water to loosen it, go ahead
  5. To serve, pour into a bowl, drizzle olive oil over the top and add a pinch of cayenne. Or Smoked Paprika if you are a weakling. Eat with chopped raw veg, good bread, crackers or add it to kebabs/sandwiches

I thought about this one long and hard.

Hummus originated in Egypt, but is eaten throughout the World. It is a HUGE part of the Middle Eastern diet, especially in Israel. I pride myself on someone who takes influence and listens to music from all over the World, however my music library is tragically short on Egyptian and Middle Eastern artists. This has to change so recommendations would be great…

I then realised that The Red Hot Chili Peppers original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, is from Israeli descent and his band may very well be my favourite band of all time. Hummus is my favourite food, so it made sense (well, to me anyway) that I pick The Chilis.

So I give you The Uplift Mofo Party Plan!
